How to Choose The Right Fire-Rated Doors?

Selecting the right fire-rated door is essential for the safety of your building and its occupants. You should consider:

Fire rating

Fire-rated doors are classified based on the duration for which they can resist fire. The fire rating you choose should be in line with your building regulations

Material

The material should be strong and durable enough to withstand the force of a fire while also complementing the building's aesthetics. Common materials for fire-rated doors include steel, wood, and glass.

Hardware

The hardware must be compatible with the fire door and meet fire safety standards. Examples of hardware to consider include hinges, locks, and panic bars.

Installation

A qualified professional should carry out the installation of your roller shutters to ensure that the door is installed correctly and according to building standards.

What Are The Types of Fire-Rated Doors?

Fire roller shutters are an essential component of any building, providing security, privacy, and aesthetics. When it comes to selecting the right roller shutter door for your needs, there are various types to choose from, each with its unique features and benefits:

Solid-core doors

These doors are typically used in high-traffic areas such as commercial and institutional buildings, where security and fire resistance are paramount.

Hollow-core doors

They are suitable for areas where fire resistance is not a priority, such as areas with low traffic. Hollow-core doors are lightweight and easy to install, making them a popular choice for many applications.

Glass doors

Glass doors are constructed with fire-resistant glass and frames and are suitable for areas where visibility is required. In case of a fire, the intumescent layer expands to create a barrier that blocks smoke and flames from spreading.

Steel doors

Steel doors are constructed with a steel frame and fire-resistant material and are commonly used in industrial and commercial settings, providing a reliable option for buildings that require high levels of protection.

What Are The Common Features of Fire-Rated Doors?

Fire-resistant materials

Fire-rated doors are constructed with fire-resistant materials, such as gypsum, metal, and glass, that enhance their resistance to fire.

Intumescent seals

These seals are placed around the door's frame and expand when exposed to heat, creating a barrier to smoke and flames.

Self-closing mechanism

These doors are equipped with a self-closing mechanism that ensures the door closes automatically. The self-closing mechanism prevents the spread of fire and smoke by closing the door behind occupants as they evacuate the building.

Fire-resistant hardware

The door's hardware, including hinges, locks, and handles, is constructed with fire-resistant materials. These materials are tested and rated for their ability to withstand exposure to high temperatures and prevent the spread of fire through the door's hardware.

Benefits of Fire-Rated Roller Shutters

Fire-rated shutter doors are an essential feature for businesses seeking reliable fire protection within their premises. These doors offer many benefits that help you protect both your employees and your products, including:

  • Fire-rated roller shutters are made from fire-resistant materials like steel and can be integrated with existing fire systems for automatic operations.
  • They will automatically close in the event of a fire, which helps contain and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the building.
  • Fire roller shutters are rated for fire resistance for up to 240 minutes, providing enough time for people to evacuate the building and for emergency services to respond.
  • These doors also provide high-security benefits. Since they are made from thick steel, they are difficult to breach, making them a perfect option for protecting your company against burglaries and break-ins.

How do fire-rated doors work?

Fire-rated doors work by creating a barrier to fire and smoke. These doors are constructed with fire-resistant materials that can withstand high temperatures and prevent the spread of fire while protecting people as they evacuate the building.

The door's frame, hardware, and seals also play a crucial role in fire protection. When exposed to fire, the door's seals expand to fill gaps and prevent smoke from entering the room.
